Log cabins used to be my least favorite type of ho Log cabins used to be my least favorite type of house to design. The knots, the yellow and red undertones, the shine, the wood stacked on wood. I kept trying to soften all of it.

Then I realized the quirks ARE the product, and the design has to work with them, not against them.

A few things that actually work: balance the yellow and red with cooler textiles like charcoal, deep green, or oxblood. Let the knots be the pattern and skip the busy prints. Mix metals so wood is not the only finish in the room. Layer texture through wool, linen, and leather. And light the space in layers, because overhead light alone flattens everything.

Lean into the cabin. That is what people came for.

A designer who actually does short term rentals is sitting there asking different questions. Will this chair survive 200 guests a year? Will the photos read in a 400 pixel thumbnail next to 39 other listings? Does this rug hide red wine? Does the breakfast nook give a guest something worth posting about?
The person scrolling Airbnb at 11pm has about 5 seconds to pick between your place and the house down the road, so you need to make that first impression memorable.
Walk into almost any Airbnb and you'll smell it. T Walk into almost any Airbnb and you'll smell it. That generic plug-in scent that's trying just a little too hard.

I used to think any fragrance was better than nothing. Then I realized guests aren't just smelling the candle. They're making a judgment about what you might be hiding.

The fix is simpler than you'd think. A small collection of quality candles, a flameless warmer so there's no fire risk, and a little note letting guests pick the scent that feels right for them. That's it. That one detail shifts the whole feeling of a space from "rental" to "someone actually thought about this."

In my latest post I break down exactly how to build a scent library for your property, which fragrance notes work best for coastal, mountain, and urban spaces, and why candle warmers are one of the best low-cost investments a host can make.
